Stepping Stones 2004
Recognizing that everyone experiences loss, the BJC Wings program created Stepping Stones, a weekend camp for young children ages 6-12 who have lost a family member or friend through death. The program is free for participating families, and is offered annually in August in Camp Wyman in Eureka, Missouri. Campers interact with other children who have had similar experiences. They learn that they are not alone and that their feelings are normal. Although this experience is not designed as therapy, Stepping Stones is a safe environment where children learn about their grief. Professional bereavement staff plan special activities that help campers express their feelings. These activities include the creation of memory pieces, feelings games and relays, and a memorial service.
